There are people and places you stumble upon that leave a mark in your heart beyond what words can express, and Bike Forge in Tulbagh is one of those places for me. It all came together on the day of the 2025 Pink Milkshake Challenge, with engines roaring through the valley as bikers poured in from Cape Town, live music filled the air, and the town buzzed with bike enthusiasts from every corner. Somewhere between the sound of laughter and the strum of a guitar, I met Freddie - the man behind the Forge, and a storyteller in every sense of the word.

More Than Just a Biker Bar
Now, when I say this place is special, I mean really special. Bike Forge isn’t just a bar or restaurant, it’s part museum, part sanctuary, and part storytelling portal, built by a man whose entire life has revolved around motorbikes. From Ducati and Kawasaki to Vespa, Honda, and beyond, the Forge is home to a collection of motorcycles that span decades. But even more remarkable than the machines are the stories they carry. Freddie didn’t just collect bikes for the fun of it. Over twenty years ago, he made it his mission to preserve motorbike history, not just through parts and paint jobs, but through the memories they hold. To him, every motorcycle is a living, breathing legacy. Each one has a soul, a journey, and a story worth remembering.
A Story That Stopped Me in My Tracks
I heard many stories during my visit - some of which aren’t mine to tell but there's one among the bunch which truly left me speechless. A man from Alaska, USA, decided to travel from Dakar, Senegal, all the way to Cape Town, South Africa, on a motorbike. The journey took him 124 days, and that very bike now stands peacefully at Bike Forge, surrounded by others, but carrying one of the boldest adventures I’ve ever heard of. And believe me, this is nothing compared to many more which you’d hear when you visit. Walking through the Forge is like flipping through a leather-bound novel filled with grit, dreams, survival, and triumph. Freddie is the narrator, and you can see the fire in his eyes every time he shares a new chapter. He speaks with a reverence that only someone truly driven by passion can express.
Built on Passion (Even When No One Came)
For Freddie, this entire venture isn’t about profit, it’s about purpose.
The current Bike Forge location opened just before the world turned upside down. A few weeks in, COVID hit, and everything stopped. No bikes. No visitors. No music. But not even a global pandemic could shake Freddie’s dedication. He stayed the course, kept the Forge alive, and today it stands stronger than ever, a place where stories, riders, and kindred spirits meet.

Why You Need to Visit
Bike Forge is a beautiful reminder that life isn’t just about the destination, it’s about the journey, the stories, and the people we meet along the way. Freddie reminded me to smile more, worry less, and follow the things that set our souls on fire. Because when we do it with heart, we create something that lasts.
