Readers Restaurant & Grill – A Culinary Treasure on Church Street, Tulbagh

Updated: Jun 4

So often we dine but rarely remember the experience. Not because the food wasn’t good, but because something subtle yet essential was missing. The warmth of a host, the creativity within the menu and dishes, the charm of the setting, the kind of care that lingers. But you don’t have to worry about any of that when you visit Readers Restaurant & Grill in Tulbagh. Set within the oldest building on a street where every single one is a national monument, Readers is already a place to behold before your first sip of wine or your first bite of food. Suddenly, you realize you’re in the middle of something unforgettable from the host welcomes and once the food start coming out. This isn’t just another stop on a food journey, it’s the kind of experience that makes you slow down, breathe deeper, and remember what dining is really meant to feel like. I went in expecting to spend an hour and a half. I stayed for nearly double that and would’ve stayed longer if I could. That’s just how inviting, creative, and soulful this place is.

Readers Restaurant & Grill

Where Time Slows Down and Flavour Speaks Loud

Owned and lovingly run by the warm and wonderfully witty Carol, Readers isn’t your typical restaurant. It’s a place where you’re invited to dine, not dash. Carol has a philosophy I instantly connected with - that dining is not a transaction, but an experience. And that’s exactly what you get at Readers Restaurant & Grill. This restaurant was opened in 1997 and has since been in operation serving hearty delicacies and hosting people from different parts of the world.

The Menu That’s Unexpected, Creative and Comforting

Now, let’s talk about the food because if you know me, that’s always why I show up. The menu at Readers is deeply inspired by local ingredients and global curiosity. Carol’s dishes carry a sense of playfulness and creativity, while still delivering serious flavour and comfort.

Imagine a beautifully prepared meats, fresh seasonal vegetables, slow-cooked stews, and sauces that taste like they’ve been simmering with love for hours. From lightly smoke trout fillet, bobotie with rice and sambal, slow roasted springbok shank and more.. Every plate that came out of that kitchen told a story. One of the highlights of my meal? The dessert. Carol’s trio of homemade ice creams might be one of the most unexpected delights I’ve tasted in a while - including a wasabi and ginger ice cream that manages to be both soothing and spicy, and a toasted sesame seed ice cream that’s rich, nutty, and deeply nostalgic. It's desserts like these that prove the kitchen is as curious as it is skilled. This isn’t a place that follows trends. Readers creates its own lane.

Something for Everyone

Are you a meat lover, vegetarian, or somewhere in between? Readers has something for you. Carol’s approach to food is inclusive and thoughtful. Every dish is prepared with attention to dietary preferences, and there’s a true emphasis on using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. You can taste the quality in every bite. From homemade bread to hearty mains and delicate desserts, the flavours feel familiar but elevated like a comforting hug with a twist.

The Atmosphere: Vintage, Warm, and Wonderfully Whimsical

This restaurant doesn’t try to be modern or flashy. And that’s exactly why it works. Every creaking wooden floorboard, every mismatched plate, every antique bookshelf tells you: slow down, breathe, and enjoy. The vibe is eclectic in the best way. It’s a blend of vintage charm and farmhouse cosiness, with the soft hum of jazz or classical music setting the tone for your unhurried dining experience. Honestly, if you’re someone who appreciates charm, storytelling, and authenticity in both space and food, you’re going to love it here.
