When most people think of the Western Cape, their minds go straight to Cape Town - its iconic beaches, buzzy cafés, and city lights, which is all great. But for me, the real magic often lies beyond the city, tucked away in the small towns that hold big stories. One of those special places is Tulbagh. And let me tell you, this little town knows how to charm you slowly, one bite and one smile at a time. As part of my culinary journey across the Western Cape, I got to visit the Tulbagh Market, a monthly community event that left my heart full and my stomach even fuller.

More Than a Market - It’s an Experience
Happening on the first Saturday of every month, Tulbagh Market isn’t just about shopping -it’s a whole experience. Think handcrafted goods, local produce, amazing food, and that warm small-town energy that’s hard to put into words. The market is lovingly run by Liesel, who’s honestly just sunshine in human form. From the moment you arrive, you feel welcome like you’re part of the family. Wandering through the stalls took me back to my childhood days, trading and traveling with my mom (who was a market trader herself). That same energy? It’s alive and well here - real, vibrant, and full of soul.
Food, Flavors, Finds & One Life-Changing Pie
Now let’s talk food, because you know that’s what I’m really here for. From street-style bites and homemade jams to locally made wines, sweet treats, pizza, and more, the market is packed with goodness. But one thing? One thing completely stole the show. The pie. Yes, a simple pie won me over. I found a local vendor whose pies blew me away. I had four different types, they were all buttery, rich, flavorful and I’m not exaggerating when I say: they are the most DELICIOUS pies I’ve had in a long while - it rewired my taste buds. I'd drive three hours to go have them again, It's that serious.
Heartfelt Moments & Familiar Faces
One of the most beautiful things about the Tulbagh Market is the people. It’s not just traders setting up tables, it’s neighbors catching up, kids running around, and laughter floating through the air. Everyone is welcome. No pretense, no rush. Just good food, great company, and genuine connection. It’s the kind of energy that feels rare and precious these days.
The market runs from 10 AM to 3 PM (for exhibitors), but the space stays open until 6 PM, giving you time to relax, grab a bite, and soak up the vibe. Whether you’re a foodie, a craft lover, or just in need of a slow morning with coffee in hand, this spot delivers. Who wouldn’t appreciate a market space traders greet each other with genuine hugs, and customers are treated like old friends. There's an unspoken bond that ties everyone together, a shared appreciation for quality, authenticity, and human connection.
Visiting the Tulbagh Market was more than just a culinary adventure - it was a journey into the heart of a community that values connection, creativity, and care. It reminded me to keep supporting local artisans and embrace the stories that food and craft carry with them. As I continue my travels, I carry with me the warmth and lessons learned from this remarkable market. A reminder that spaces like this still exist - spaces where people come together without judgment or division. So if you’re ever wandering through the Western Cape and craving an experience that’s real, soulful, and a little bit delicious, then you should definitely head to Tulbagh Market. It’s a small-town gem that deserves a big spotlight.
