Updated: 9 hours ago

Travelling across this province is nothing short of remarkable, every town has its rhythm, flavour, and charm. And let me tell you this: no two are ever quite the same. Some places surprise you with their stories and warm, welcoming people, while others steal your heart with a single bite, breathtaking views, a quiet moment… or a perfect glass of wine.TULBAGH was all of that and more.

Tulbagh - Western Cape

Tucked away in a lush valley surrounded by mountains, this historic town doesn’t just whisper its charm, it wraps you in it. From its preserved Cape Dutch architecture to its deeply rooted wine heritage and artful energy, Tulbagh & its people quietly swept me off my feet. What was meant to be an impromptu visit turned into one of the most heartwarming and memorable chapters in my Western Cape adventure - a place where time slows down and everything feels a little more intentional. In this article, I will give you a reason or ten reasons to visit.

With local spots to help you experience the VERY BEST of the town, here’s a summary of things you need to know before you plan your trip to this charming valley.

A Glimpse into Tulbagh's History

Tulbagh may be a small town, but it comes with a big story, one filled with charm, resilience, and deep South African roots. Tulbagh, originally named Roodezand, was officially founded in 1699, making it one of the oldest towns in the Western Cape. It’s named after Ryk Tulbagh, a Dutch governor of the Cape Colony during the 1700s. Early settlers were drawn to the region’s fertile soil, and it didn’t take long for farming - especially grape growing and winemaking - to become the heartbeat of the local economy. Over the centuries, Tulbagh blossomed into a thriving agricultural community. Then came the devastating earthquake of 1969 - a moment that shook (quite literally) the entire town. Many buildings were badly damaged or destroyed. But instead of modernizing, the people of Tulbagh made a bold choice: they restored the town’s historic heart.

Today, Church Street is home to the largest number of heritage buildings on a single street in South Africa, lovingly rebuilt in their original Cape Dutch style. It’s a beautiful blend of old-world architecture and modern-day pride and a must-see for any visitor. Tulbagh’s story is one of heritage, recovery, and timeless beauty, a small town with a rich past that continues to inspire today. Visiting Tulbagh is stepping into history especially one that has been very well preserved!

Town of Tulbagh

When I first visited Tulbagh around March, I had no idea this charming little town was quickly becoming one of the most sought-after wedding destinations in the Western Cape. To my surprise, it was fully booked for accommodation during both of my visits.
